Building Communities of Stewardship Around Your Data - Step 2
Yesterday we kicked off our conversation on how to start actualizing a successful Data Governance in our organization by building communities of Data Stewardship around our enterprise data. We stepped into setting a solid readiness foundation for activating governance by stewardship.
As discussed, the execution of governance is more of an art than a science. Hence, we have to be very strategic with our game plan. Placing the ‘why’ of Data Governance at the forefront of our minds will help actualize this.
So, what is our ‘why’ for data governance?
Changing the way we engage, use and care for our data; making our data work for us; turning the huge amount of data we have in our ecosystems to an unparalleled asset by preventing unethical creation, management, and usage of the same.
Simply put – Creating Quality, Trusted, Business-Ready, Insightful Data is the 'why' of Governance. Every organization desires this and they want to start seeing this from day one.
This week, we’re unlocking the ‘how’ with stewardship – the heartbeat of a successful governance adoption. The more stewardship we build around our data value chain, the richer and quicker we can start seeing success in sight.
We’re spending time reviewing how to build an effective Community of Stewardship around our data to set the tone and drive our execution.
Yesterday we reviewed step 1 of community formation – Identifying data communities and community members. Check this out on Building Communities Of Stewardship Around Your Data
Today, we’re going to start narrowing the list down for each community with Step 2.
Step 2. Confirmation & Ratification of Data Community Members
Your identification process from step one should give you a good and comprehensive list of candidates that might fit into leading your community outreach for stewardship. These candidates are your intended list to go after to engage to assess their fitness for championing your stewardship cause. You will need to better understand their role and reputation within their data community by talking to other members and partners of their community. Do your homework around them to understand how they can help you win.
Yesterday, we talked about how to cast the net wide on the ‘who is who’ of each data community for ‘best fit’ candidates to help champion stewardship in each data community.
Today, our goal for step 2 is to narrow down identified candidates and confirm the best Stewardship driver for each data community. Typically, you’ll like to have one individual champion as Lead Steward for each community and build an execution team around them. There might be exceptions in very large and complex organizations or setups with overlaps of portfolios or functions where you’ll need one than one individual to champion stewardship in each data community. The recommended rule of thumb to facilitate quick execution is to have just one individual and with supporting team and proxies to help drive the execution of governance activities in their community. You will need to do the following:
Confirm list of Data Stewards
o Conduct meetings/interviews to validate or refine candidate list
o Hire/appoint Data Stewards
Confirm list of Business Owners
o Conduct meetings/interviews to validate or refine candidate list
Confirm list of Data Custodians
o Conduct meetings/interviews to validate or refine candidate list
o Communicate the role of Data Custodian to candidates
o Discuss the expectations and benefits of the role
o Build consensus among stakeholder list for Data Custodian candidates
Confirm list of Data Owners/Data Process Owners
o Conduct meetings/interviews to validate or refine candidate list
o Communicate the role of Data Owner/ Data Process Owner to candidates
o Discuss the expectations and benefits of the role
o Build consensus among stakeholder list for Data Owner/Data Process Owner
o candidates
In summary, your community membership confirmation & ratification should realize these highlighted goals:
· Confirmation of Stewardship Leader for each data community
· Confirmation of the list of Data Stewards
· Confirmation of the list of Business Owners
· Confirmation of list of Data Owners, Process Owners & Data Custodians.
Tomorrow, we'll explore the next step once you’ve identified which of the highlighted candidates above are ready for confirmed Data Community Membership.
