Building Communities of Stewardship Around Your Data - Step 3
Today is day 3 of our series of articles on Practical Data Governance. We’re continuing to unpack the details behind an effective Data Governance adoption by anchoring our execution to the life-wire of an effective governance execution – Data Stewardship.
We’re being intentional with our desired outcome for success as we truly understand the 'why' of data governance is a cultural transformation. Converting every data citizen to an active steward of the biggest asset in their enterprise – Data-as-an-Asset and the biggest raw material for our current digital age to gain operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, revenue growth, insightful analytics and more...
This week we’re stepping through how to build communities of Data Stewards around our Data Domains, focusing on one step at a time with some practical tips we can add to our toolbox of execution.
On Monday we kicked-off with Identification of community members by casting the net on candidates to help each community formation
Yesterday, we started narrowing down our list for each community member/champions that will help lead the way to evangelize stewardship. Check out the 'how' from step 2 Data Community Formation - Step 2
Today, we’re going to zoom in on the ratified list and sit down with each individual member on this list to engage them in a one to one highlighting the importance of their partnership for a win-win for them and the enterprise.
Step 3. Hold 1:1 Meeting with Community Members
You will need to engage each community member and highlight key expectations for their roles & responsibilities to make sure they’re comfortable with their assigned roles.
Highlight key opportunities and incentives in their newly assigned roles.
Educate them about the importance of their roles and let them know they’ll be equipped and empowered for success in their roles.
Call-out key governance activities for their data community, their engagement and measurable KPIs tied to their roles & responsibilities.
Customize Data Governance Presentation for each community member meeting
o It is helpful to have information for the Data Community member to take away for further reflection following the meeting
o The information in your presentation should be relevant to the specific Data Community
Engage each Data Community Member
o Define the Objectives of Community Membership
o Provide background on Data Governance
o Define Data Governance Program and context
o Define Role of Data Community
o Provide an overview of the Data Community structure and engagement model
o Set expectations of the Data Community (e.g. objectives, timelines, deliverables, workload etc.)
o Review the holistic governance roadmap for the enterprise.
o Let each community member feel they have an opportunity to influence change and drive success for their Data Community.
In summary, your goal at this stage for this 1:1 meeting is:
· To woo each champion and get them energized for the work ahead
· Make them feel they’re in the driving seat for governance adoption in their community and you’re just a co-pilot to help them win.
· Set them on a mission to replicate themselves across their data community
· Give them opportunity to ask questions and guidance
Tomorrow, we’ll explore next step once you’ve engaged your new key allies for each data community.
